The owner ensured staff worked in a manner which resulted in people being well cared for and respected, while ensuring staff were respected and appropriately supported. The registered manager used a variety of methods to assess and monitor the quality of the service. These included regular audits, staff, relative and ‘resident’ meetings to seek their views about the service provided. We have two lounges in the care home where residents may socialise. Our front lounge has high ceilings and period features, it is a busy meeting place where residents enjoy cups of tea by the fire and multiple activities such as exercise classes and arts & crafts. Our second lounge is placed at the rear of the house with French doors that open onto Clovelly House’s gardens.

The service provides single room accommodation for up to nineteen predominantly elderly people who need assistance with personal care, including those with a dementia related illness. At the time of the inspection there were fourteen people using the service. The service is situated over two floors which are serviced by a passenger lift. There are a number of rooms with en suite facilities and enough bathrooms including assisted baths on both floors. A lounge and dining room are situated on the ground floor with a conservatory at the front of the service.

Nothing is too much trouble for Clovelly House
This is an ideal lounge for some quiet time or for a more private, personal chat with relatives and friends. We also find this room is the best place to host our singers and musical entertainment who visit regularly to perform for our residents. People we spoke with said their care was unrushed and received in a way they wanted staff to provide it. From reviewing records we judged care plans as including suitable information to assist the staff who worked at the home. The registered manager provided us with a satisfactory action plan after our inspection in June 2014 regarding what actions would be taken to improve medication procedures.
The staff are professional and friendly and I am kept informed of my mum's condition and was pleased to receive photos, handicrafts and videos sent to me when Covid restrictions prevented visits. The staff go over and above to provide social events for friends, relatives and residents. The inspectors looked at three areas of the Key Lines of Enquiries and our rating increased from inadequate to requires improvement.

This inspection was completed to check suitable action had been taken to improve procedures regarding the handling of medication. We wanted to answer the question whether the service was now safe. Clovelly House is a care home that can accommodate up to 19 older people. At the time of our inspection there were 18 people living in the service.
People all had an individual care plan, which set out their care needs. Care plans contained satisfactory information and were accessible to staff. Beyond this, we actively encourage our residents to pursue any interests and hobbies they had prior to coming to Clovelly House and provide support to encourage this. We aim to give our residents a range of traditional homemade food which is tasty, fresh and locally sourced, with seasonal changes making dining at Clovelly House a pleasure that all can enjoy. For services we haven't rated we use ticks and crosses to show whether we've asked them to take further action or taken enforcement action against them.

There were sufficient numbers of suitably qualified staff on duty and staffing levels were adjusted to meet people’s changing needs and wishes. People’s risks were being managed effectively to ensure they were safe. Records recorded changes in people’s level of risk and how those risks were going to be managed. – there are some services which we can’t rate, while some might be under appeal from the provider.
